CASHBACK IS AWARDED BEST SHORT FILM AT THE CHICAGO FILM FESTIVAL
Left Turn Films and RSA Films are pleased to announce that CASHBACK (2004), the second short film written and directed by Sean Ellis, has been awarded the Gold Hugo and Best Short Film Award by the 40th Chicago International Film Festival, 7-21 October 2004. As part of the Short Narrative Competition, it was chosen from over 1,000 short film entrants. The selection also makes CASHBACK eligible for the 2006 Academy Awards. Chicago screenings will take place on October 10th, 13th, and 14th, marking the film's North American Premiere, after its World Premiere on September 1st, at the prestigious Sao Paulo International Short Film Festival in Brazil.
Previously this year, CASHBACK was among the final ten competitors shortlisted for the 2003 BAFTA Short Film Award. Selected for worldwide festival support by the British Council and for world sales by the British Film Institute, CASHBACK seems to be following in the success of Ellis' debut short film, LEFT TURN (2001). That earlier film, a 14-minute thriller, has been sold to numerous television broadcasters, including HBO in the US and SkyTV and Film Four in the UK.
Starring Sean Biggerstaff (the Harry Potter films) and Emilia Fox (The Pianist), CASHBACK focuses on the characters who work the late shift at the local Sainsbury's and how they deal with the boredom of that eight-hour shift. Part ensemble comedy, part visual monologue, it represents a more light-hearted departure from Ellis' previous work, noted for his haunting visuals and unsettling narratives.
However, Ellis, also one of Britain's premier fashion photographers, will be returning to his darker territory with his first feature film, BROKEN, a psychological thriller. He will collaborate again with his long-time producer, Lene Bausager, on this feature debut.
